Marbling is the realistic simulation of marble and stone using paint. It can be applied to any surface that can be painted, but is best used where actual marble might be used. Marble conveys opulence, elegance and style whilst also giving weight, solidity and formality. The technique is ancient, earliest examples were found in the times of the Pharoahs in Egypt. The tradition in Europe gained momentum in Renaisance Italy and reached its apogee in Northern Europe during the C19th. A strong tradition exists in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. The British tradition has always been there up with the best in Europe, the most famous exponent being Thomas Kershaw from Lancashire.
